Almost 60 years ago, Gault began her search for a user friendly versatile ceramic clay body for her sculpture. At the time no advantage to paperclay beside fiber strength before fire was taught or published. By 1990 Dr. Gault first found an optimum ratio of pulp-paper and clay that would rewrite 85% of the 130 most common methods/ rules of forming any shape in ceramics. Multiple problems- such as cracking in drying and firing, excessive fuel use were solved.
More than 30 years ago her provocative teaching, exhibition and publication would inspire and challenge thousands of artists and makers worldwide to advance and we see evidence of beauty and wonder.
. The applications paperclay ceramic extend far beyond the field of art, to nano compounds, medicine, filtration, and sustainable materials research. Research continues.
